Adding a link through the Insert menu takes three or four clicks. Select your text and press Ctrl + K instead. Paste the address, press Enter, and the text becomes a link.

The Shortcut

  • Select the text you want to link
  • Press Ctrl + K
  • Paste the link and press Enter
  • Works in Google Docs, Word, Gmail, Outlook and more
  • Mac: ⌘ + K

Bonus Tip: Ctrl + / Shows Every Shortcut

In Google Docs, press Ctrl + / to open a searchable list of every keyboard shortcut. Type a word like strike to find the one you need. It works in Google Sheets and Slides, too. On a Mac, press ⌘ + /.
